how it works

where:

Generate builds a new drum machine: twelve voices, a beat, a tempo and a swing. Nothing is a sample. Every sound is synthesised in your browser, so nobody else has this kit unless you send them its eight-character code.

The arrows either side of the style pick what kind of kit comes next. new kit keeps the beat and changes the sounds; new beat does the reverse.

Tap a step to cycle it on, accent, off. Tap a voice's name to hear it and bring up its knobs. Shift-drag a knob for fine moves; double-click puts it back.

A locked voice keeps its sound and its part while you generate around it. Lock the kick and snare you like and roll the rest.
where:

new sound rerolls how it sounds. new part rerolls its row. flip tries the row another way: mirrored, a step late, off-beat, half-time, double-time, then back. reset puts sound and row back as the machine arrived. engine swaps the synthesis behind it.
where:

Plays the beat as four bars, the last a fill built from the beat itself: a snare roll, a run down the toms or a stop, with a crash back in if the cymbal is on. The same beat always gets the same fill, and the exports carry it.

Undo takes back the last change, whatever it was: a step, a knob, a flip, a clear or a whole new machine. A drag counts as one change. Add shift to redo.

The arrows beside it do something else: they step through the machines you have generated.

copy link saves the machine in the address, edits and all. loop .wav is four bars of audio.

beat .mid is a General MIDI clip that plays a stock Drum Rack as it stands: kick on C1, snare on D1, closed hat on F#1.

kit .zip adds a clip per voice and every sound as a WAV. Drop the samples on a Drum Rack and the beat plays this exact kit, or put a WAV on Serum 2's sample oscillator.

Four sounds for the sample slots of TE's EP-2350 fx mic, any mix of single voices and riffs of the beat, sized to fit its 1 MB. Copied straight on, each plays once per press. Through Mic Gnome's samples tab a riff can loop until you press again.

Drawn from the beat: the first row is every step something plays on, and each row after grows from the one above by a rule the kit code picks. It is also the wallpaper down the sides and the cover in the kit zip.
